The steel dome of Strač Fortress with the mountains beyond

Strač Fortress, Trebinje

Strač Fortress, an Austro-Hungarian fortress dug into a hill at 750 metres, with the only surviving domes of their kind in Europe.

Strač is an Austro-Hungarian fortification south-east of Trebinje, 750 metres above sea level, overlooking Zupci, Petrovo polje, the Trebinje forest and the town. It was built between 1910 and 1916 as part of a system of ten forts defending Trebinje and the Bay of Kotor. Architecturally it is one of the most interesting and largest fortresses in the Balkans.

Unlike other forts of its time, Strač is mostly buried underground, which is why it is considered the most mysterious building of its era. It has between 60 and 65 rooms, and on top sit two steel gun domes that experts regard as the only surviving domes of their kind in Europe. The domes, weighing about 55 tonnes each, were hauled up by an artillery tractor designed by Ferdinand Porsche.

Austrian experts have estimated that building it today would cost around 60 million euros. The fortress is not set up for visitors, so exploring it is a real adventure for history lovers. The new glass Skywalk viewpoint nearby looks out over Trebinje.
