The Museum of Herzegovina building in the Old Town

Museum of Herzegovina, Trebinje

Museum of Herzegovina, a museum founded in 1952 on Jovan Dučić's initiative, with archaeology, ethnology and art collections.

The Museum of Herzegovina is Trebinje's main museum and the best place to get to know the history and culture of eastern Herzegovina. It was Jovan Dučić's idea and was founded in 1952. It stands in the Old Town and has about 1,500 m² of space, around 800 m² of it for exhibitions.

The permanent displays cover archaeology from the Stone Age to the Middle Ages, an ethnology exhibition on the life of Serbs in eastern Herzegovina from the mid-19th to the mid-20th century, and Dučić's own collection: stone sculpture, paintings, tapestries, Japanese embroidery, the poet's decorations, his ambassador's uniform and his manuscripts.

The museum also keeps the bequests of artists such as Milorad Ćorović and Radovan Ždralo, whose bequest counts 122 sculptures in semi-precious stone, around 400 paintings, prints and sculptures in all. It regularly hosts exhibitions, concerts and literary evenings, and has a branch at Ušće near Lastva, the bequest of Dubravka Kujačić.
