The Leotar ridge above Trebinje

Mount Leotar, Trebinje

Mount Leotar, the mountain above Trebinje: on a clear day you can see the sea from its 1,228-metre summit.

Leotar rises north of the town, with its highest point at 1,228 metres. It shields Trebinje from cold northerly winds, which is part of why the town gets more than 260 sunny days a year. The town's football and handball clubs are named after it.

On a clear day the summit looks out to the Adriatic in the south, Orjen and Komovi in the east and Biokovo in the west. The mountain has two marked hiking trails, a mountain-bike route from Trebinje (27.9 km with 1,000 m of climbing) and a paragliding launch site, and its slopes are known for medicinal herbs.
